Ipod question please help!?

so i used my friends itunes for my ipod and i just got a new ipod and want to creat my own acount now but my mom wont let me buy songs. is there any good free legal websites i can download music onto my itunes and ipod? or can i plug in my ipod and put all my friends songs onto my itunes and onto my new ipod? sorry if this is confusing i just really want to use my new ipod and dont want to use my friends. thanks(:
