Why is the 40% American owned BP Oil company suddenly being referred to as "British" Petroleum in the US?

you know burger king calls itself bk, but people still know it as burger king. so if british petroleum didn't want people thinking of it as british anymore they should have changed it to "global oil" or something, instead of bp which is just an abbreviation of british petroleum
